Judge Watanabe's decision on the public forum

Peace activists arrested in Colorado Springs in 2003 were supposed to be part of a panel discussion with the City of Colorado Springs and Springs Police today. The activists walked out of the event before it could begin, though.

The public discussion was ordered by a judge. It was part of a settlement the City made with the activists after the activists sued over their treatment by Springs Police. The settlement said the discussion would be both public and videotaped, to be shown on the city's public access TV channel and as a training aid for police.

After the 2003 Palmer Park tear gassing, rubber bullets, pepper spray, and taser, many of us went to city council to complain about the tactics. Members of the "Dairy Queen Dozen" came down from Boulder. Here is some of the testimony.

Mark Lewis addressess city council on tear gas facts in rebuttal of police misinformation that these chemical weapons are harmless to use on people.

Nancy Doub speaks to city council in 2003. She was not arrested, but came from the Dairy Queen to find her son and husband being handcuffed by a team led by Erwin Paladino, the same cop that dragged Elizazbeth Fineron across Tejon Street in the St. Paddy's Day parade.

February 15, 2003. Out of millions of people in hundreds of rallies and demonstrations, protesting the Iraq War that started March 19, Colorado Springs was the only place in the nation that used tear gas chemical weapons on it's own citizens. The police stopped traffic on Academy Blvd. and with the street empty, people took the march from the sidewalks to the street. The cops put on riot gear and gas masks, and march everyone back to the parking lot. When the street was completely cleared and everyone was in the parking area, they fired the tear gas, rubber bullets, and tasers. The first tear gas canister fired is sitting on top of this computer.

At another action that day at Pete Field, they arrested 12 people inside a Dairy Queen near the peaceful protest at the gate, most of whom were just eating lunch and had nothing to do with the legal protest.
