Help Operation Recovery Grill Gen. Campbell

Gen. Don Campbell just took command of the Army's Third Corps and Fort Hood, the U.S. military's largest and most deployed base. On General Campbell's first week of command, IVAW's Operation Recovery Campaign brought the epidemic of military trauma to his attention and asked him to meet with representatives from our Campaign.  To this day, his office has not responded.  Help us put un-treated military trauma on the General's agenda his first month at work.

The level of concern expressed by voters in the Nov 2010 election over the wording for the measure to allow current sitting county commissioners to self-extend their own terms appears not to have been resolved.  At least, there has been no confirmation that a definite decision has been made by the commissioners to place this before the voters with clear wording on the Nov 2011 ballot.

If you feel this is a matter voters need to have a second chance to vote on, we would very much appreciate your time in signing our petition which will be presented to the BoCC in August.  We feel that the future of the entire Pikes Peak Region will depend largely on the trust we feel toward our elected officials and that this matter would be a first step in rebuilding some of the trust lost the past two years.

NO Nuclear Power Plant in Pueblo!!

The Pueblo County reports commissioners will take a vote on whether to approve a zoning change for the project on April 25.
Nothing threatens the places we love and the environmental values we share in quite the same way as nuclear power. Yet at this moment, nuclear advocates are pushing for a new $5 billion nuclear plant to be built right in Pueblo County, Colorado.
Email the three County Commissioners with your petition for them to vote NO to Nuclear Power Plant in Pueblo.

Stop Fracking Now!

We, the undersigned, call on Congress to pass the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act this year.

It's time to hold the oil and gas production industry to the same standards as any other industry to ensure the safe protection of America's drinking water.

Hydraulic fracturing is a controversial drilling technique which injects millions of tons of highly toxic chemical fluids into the ground to break apart shale and release natural gas. Even while scientists believe these chemicals may already be poisoning America's drinking water, the natural gas industry has unleashed a massive 34-state drilling campaign.

Democracy for America
Now, Republicans are pushing for well over $50 billion in cuts to the budget, which would result in the loss of 700,000 jobs nationwide according to leading economists. They won't even consider cutting the $53 billion the Republicans have used to subsidize the oil industry or eliminating projects out of the defense budget that even the Pentagon says it doesn't need and doesn't want. Instead, they want cuts on everything from local law enforcement to community health centers, from food assistance to low-income women, infants, and children to rural development investment. And of course, they made it clear over and over again, that cutting Social Security benefits must be on the table.

Republicans have gone from being fiscally irresponsible to morally reprehensible in only a few short months. Their goal appears to be the death of civil society by a 1,000 cuts.

It's time for Democrats to stand up and hold their ground. Republicans in Congress can't balance the budget on the backs of the poor and middle class -- there must be shared sacrifice.

Join me, and our partners at CREDO Action, in calling on Democrats in Congress to accept no new budget cuts while we continue to give tax breaks to people who make a million dollars a year.

On Monday, March 15, 2011, Kansas State Representative Virgil Peck said:

"It looks like to me if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works maybe we have found a [solution] to our illegal immigration problem."

It's time to hold politicians like Rep. Peck accountable for their hateful rhetoric.

Stop the Republicans' Brutal Cuts

The Republicans' budget includes cuts to food aid for hungry pregnant women and children, programs people need during an economic crisis. It's just wrong.

And instead of creating jobs, this budget will destroy them.

With Republicans in control of the House of Representatives, these cuts could become law. Our only hope is a public outcry strong enough to stiffen Democrats' spines and cause Republicans to back down. Can you sign the petition?

A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to Democratic senators and representatives.
Center for Biological Diversity
The House of Representatives has voted to cut funds that support women's health clinics across the United States and around the world.
For many women, subsidized community health programs, such as those provided by Planned Parenthood and the United Nations Population Fund, represent the only access they have to reproductive services, family planning and birth control. Millions of women could lose that access if these measures pass.
Tell senators that, for the sake of women's health and the health of our planet, funds to women's health programs need to be restored in the upcoming continuing resolution bill.

A far-reaching anti-choice bill, introduced by Republican Chris Smith and supported by 173 members of the House, includes a provision that could redefine rape and set women's rights back by decades.

Right now, federal dollars can't be used for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or when the woman's life is in danger. But the Smith bill would narrow that use to "cases of 'forcible' rape but not statutory or coerced rape."

As far too many women know, bruises and broken bones do not define rape - a lack of consent does. Please sign the petition today.

Despite the jobs that have been created by Colorado’s renewable energy standards, Republicans in the Colorado Senate have introduced a bill that would roll them back dramatically—on little more than a baseless ideological assumption that renewable energy "hurts the economy."
On Monday afternoon, this terrible bill faces its first hearing in the Senate State Affairs Committee. Please take a minute right now to call members of this committee, and urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 71!

Color Of Change

Hundreds of thousands of people go into debt every year enrolling in for-profit higher education programs like DeVry and Argosy — sold on the idea that they'll graduate with skills that will lead to opportunity and a better life. In reality, many come out with a mountain of debt they can't pay back and no better prospects at employment.

Thankfully, the Obama administration is trying to rein in this industry, which preys on low-income Americans. Their plan is to stop federal financial aid from going to higher ed programs that don't actually help students get jobs and pay off their debt.

Please join us in calling on Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Congress to stand strong and protect low-income students.

Wilderness Society
I strongly oppose the plan for lethal control of wolves in designated Wilderness on Unimak Island. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must ensure that any management prescriptions regarding wildlife are based on sound science, especially in designated Wilderness. The agency must also adhere to the Wilderness Act of 1964 in this decision, as 98% of the area in question is designated Wilderness.

Progress Now
Before his election last November as Secretary of State, Scott Gessler was a partner in one of Colorado’s most politically connected law firms. He represented some of the state’s most controversial right wing political groups and candidates. Some of Gessler’s clients have been disgraced by campaign finance disclosure complaints, allegations of unlawful false statements against their opponents, and other alleged election law violations.

Gessler promised on the campaign trail last year that he would set aside his past associations, and serve the state of Colorado without the conflicts of interest that would seem obvious given his history. But Gessler wants to remain employed part time by his old law firm while he serves as Secretary of State.

Colorado’s Secretary of State, the state’s chief elections official, moonlighting at a law firm that specializes in elections? This is completely unacceptable. Sign our petition now, demanding that Gessler immediately abandon this absurd plan. And if he can’t, Gessler should immediately resign his position as Secretary of State.

Pacific Environment
For years, California utility PG&E has been trying to build a pipeline that would ship imported natural gas from Coos Bay, Oregon to their customers in California. The LNG terminal would pose a major safety threat to thousands of Coos Bay and North Bend residents. On its route, the “Pacific Connector” pipeline will also destroy hundreds of acres of Oregon’s forests, endanger salmon habitat, and disrupt private property.
The Oregon Department of Energy has determined that the gas from this project is not needed in Oregon, and Californians have rejected numerous similar LNG projects.

Make your voice heard and help us stop this misguided project! The Port of Coos Bay’s application for a slip dock to accommodate the proposed Jordan Cove LNG terminal is now open for public comment. We need you to send a message to Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) to let them know that we are concerned about this application.

Raise Hope for Congo

This past November we came to you to ask for your support for a petition telling the Securities and Exchange Commission that we need strong regulations on conflict minerals. Over 2,300 of you signed the petition, and thanks to your action and comments, the SEC developed a strong first draft of regulations requiring companies to trace and audit their supply chains.

Through the end of January, the SEC is accepting comments for revisions to their initial draft of the regulations. They’ll use these comments to help guide the final rule-making process. You can be sure that companies will be doing their best to weaken the proposed regulations, which is why we need you to take a stand now more than ever.

Once more, we need you to call on the SEC to ensure strong regulations on conflict minerals.

Progressive Democrats

Last week, former Republican Senator Alan Simpson sent an arrogant, sexist letter to the Older Women's League calling Social Security "a milk cow with 310 million tits."

Simpson co-chairs the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which is supposed to propose ways to reduce our national debt.

Simpson should know Social Security has absolutely no impact on the national debt. Every penny goes directly from our payroll deductions into the Social Security Trust Fund, which is fully funded until 2037.

We will shortly launch a campaign to fire Simpson and to take all Social Security cuts "off the table." But it's election time, and we must be sure to keep the Senate in Democratic hands, and not let extremist Tea Party Republicans take over - including Joe Miller of Alaska, who declared Social Security unconstitutional.

Please stand with Senate Democrats and declare your support for protecting Social Security.

United Farm Workers

Since the beginning of this year, clergy and farm worker supporters have been expressing concern to the Kroger grocery chain (which includes Ralphs, Food for Less, Fred Meyer, QFC, Frys, Baker's, City Market, Dillions, Foods Co, Gerbes, Hilander, JayC Stores, King Soopers, Owen's Market, Scotts Food & Pharmacy, Smiths Food & Drug, Smith's Marketplace, Turkey Hill, and more) over widespread accounts of worker abuse at Giumarra Vineyards. Giumarra supplies Kroger with table grapes and other fruits and vegetables under their Nature's Partner label. Concerned consumers nationwide have sent letters, e-mails and even met with company representatives in order to urge Kroger to hold Giumarra accountable. Kroger has failed to respond. Take a moment to let this retail giant know that they have a responsibility to uphold the standards they have set for their vendors.

Elected leaders should listen to their constituents. That's how it's supposed to work.

And voters have spoken. A recent poll by SurveyUSA about corporate influence over our democracy shows that voters want their leaders to stand up on this critical issue. Here's what it found:

An overwhelming 73% of voters, including 67% of Republicans and 71% of independents, are more likely to support a candidate for Congress who works to reduce the influence of corporate lobbyists in Washington.

And almost two out of three voters (60%) disagree with the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case.

As one of over 475,000 people who have endorsed the Fight Washington Corruption pledge—which calls on Congress to deal with exactly these issues—that may not surprise you.

But what may surprise you is that Sen. Bennet and Rep. Lamborn still have not signed this pledge.

Send a free fax to share these poll results with Sen. Bennet and Rep. Lamborn and tell them to sign the pledge!!

The economy is in shambles, unemployment is at record levels and home foreclosures are soaring. Congress can't get it together to act on these issues. But there's growing momentum in Washington to—wait for it—slash Social Security?

Believe it. Republicans are campaigning on benefit cuts. Conservative Democrats like Steny Hoyer are echoing their talking points.

Everyone's counting on the Deficit Commission to do the dirty work. The commission is stacked with conservatives who've embraced cutting Social Security, and both houses of congress promised to fast-track a vote on its recommendations.
That means that even though no jobs bill can pass congress right now, Social Security cuts might.

To stop the cuts, we need to send a crystal-clear message to members of Congress: Americans reject benefit cuts, and we expect them to do the same. Can you sign our promise to oppose cuts to Social Security? We'll use your signature to pressure them to sign a pledge protecting Social Security while they're home in Colorado for recess. But we need a strong response to make our point. Click below to add your name:

Usually, high-powered insurance company lobbyists in Washington, DC takes a long, luxurious August vacation - but not this year.  This year the lobbyists have turned their sights to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in a blatant attempt to hijack reform.1

After spending millions of dollars and employing thousands of lobbyists only to lose the battle against reform the insurance companies are desperate for any opportunity to weaken the new health care law.2  That's why the lobbyists are targeting the NAIC - the new law tasks them with making recommendations on regulations to HHS Secretary Sebelius.

Click here to call your Insurance Commissioner and tell them you support tough regulations that make health care affordable and hold the insurance companies accountable

We need your help to pass the FRAC Act - twin bills in the Senate (S 1215) and House (HR 2766) that remove the exemption to the Safe Drinking Water Act for fracking and call for the disclosure and monitoring of the chemicals used in the process. Contacting your elected officials is critical to its passage.

Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas is one of the country's biggest environmental and public health challenges in history. The 2005 Energy Bill exempted a controversial drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing from the Safe Drinking Water Act, which allowed the natural gas industry to unleash a massive 34-State drilling campaign.
