A year ago, Glenn Beck called the President a racist who had a deep-seeded hatred for White people.1 In just over a week, he says he will "reclaim"2 the legacy of the civil rights movement by holding his "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC — on the same day and place as Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.3
You can get mad at Beck. You can protest and try to prevent him from stepping on Dr. King's honor for one day. The reality is that the next day — and five days-a-week from there on out — Beck will be back on Fox News, speaking to millions and spreading hate, lies, and fear, as he does every week.
The
real problem is Fox News. Fox News gives Beck his platform, and Fox promotes
his events — all despite Beck losing virtually all of his major advertisers
in the last year.

In the next few weeks, the EPA has a real opportunity to put an end to decades of loosely regulated toxic coal ash disposal. But they're seriously considering maintaining the status quo and letting Dirty Coal continue its assault on our environment.
Help them make the right decision – take a moment to sign our petition to the EPA and tell them where YOU stand.
Support Giumarra workers by contacting Krogers/City Market/Smith's/Food 4 Less/Foods Co. today
Earlier this month, thousands of farm worker supporters took a stand to support workers in their class action lawsuit where Giumarra has been accused of cheating them out of their wages.Elected leaders should listen to their constituents. That's how it's supposed to work.
And voters have spoken. A recent poll by SurveyUSA about corporate influence over our democracy shows that voters want their leaders to stand up on this critical issue. Here's what it found:
An overwhelming 73% of voters, including
67% of Republicans and 71% of independents, are more likely to support
a candidate for Congress who works to reduce the influence of corporate
lobbyists in Washington.
And almost two out of three voters (60%)
disagree with the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case.
As one of over 475,000 people who have endorsed the Fight Washington Corruption pledge—which calls on Congress to deal with exactly these issues—that may not surprise you.
But what may surprise you is that Sen. Bennet and Rep. Lamborn still have not signed this pledge.
The HMO and insurance industries have spent a breathtaking $769 million since 2007 to influence federal public policy and elected officials.1 In 2010 they have not let up, despite passage of the new health reform law. They're now trying to undermine the law with intense pressure on state officials to water down the federal provisions and interfere with their implementation.2
Click here and fight back against the insurance industry's army of lobbyists.
Right now there is only one Internet that treats everybody and all content equally. But Google and Verizon have a proposal would change all of that. Yet it's not Google's place to write regulations — that's the job of the FCC, which has failed to act quickly to protect American consumers.
Sudan is at a dangerous crossroads. Violence is on the rise in Darfur, next year’s referendum on South Sudanese independence is in jeopardy, and Omar al-Bashir’s repressive regime continues to deny the people of Sudan basic freedoms.
Without high-level pressure from the United States and its allies, the situation in Sudan could spiral out of control.
Thankfully, some Members of Congress are demanding action with House Resolution 1588, which calls for stronger United States engagement in support of Sudan’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the referendum on Southern Sudanese independence scheduled for January 2011.
The economy is in shambles, unemployment is at record levels and home foreclosures are soaring. Congress can't get it together to act on these issues. But there's growing momentum in Washington to—wait for it—slash Social Security?
Believe it. Republicans are campaigning on benefit cuts. Conservative Democrats like Steny Hoyer are echoing their talking points.
Everyone's counting on the
Deficit Commission to do the dirty work. The commission is stacked with
conservatives who've embraced cutting Social Security, and both houses
of congress promised to fast-track a vote on its recommendations.
That means that even though no jobs bill
can pass congress right now, Social Security cuts might.
To stop the cuts, we need to send a crystal-clear message to members of Congress: Americans reject benefit cuts, and we expect them to do the same. Can you sign our promise to oppose cuts to Social Security? We'll use your signature to pressure them to sign a pledge protecting Social Security while they're home in Colorado for recess. But we need a strong response to make our point. Click below to add your name:
The endocrine-disrupting chemical BPA (bisphenol-A) can cause reproductive and behavioral abnormalities and lower intellectual ability. It also sets the stage for cancers, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. There have been nationwide efforts to ban it from food and beverage containers, especially those used by babies and children.
New studies now reveal that BPA is found in cash register receipts—from fast food restaurants, gas stations, post offices, and big retailers, wherever “carbonless” receipts are dispensed. Even if we are careful to avoid BPA in bottles and other products, we all handle these receipts every day—making them the most common pathway into your body.
We have filed a Citizen Petition with the Consumer Products Safety Commission to have BPA banned from cash register receipts. Please contact CPSP and add your voice to ours. Tell them to pay attention to the latest science, and tell them you don’t want BPA getting absorbed through your skin.
Almost three weeks after the disclosure of massive plagiarism by ex-Congressman Scott McInnis in essays he wrote on water policy, politics in Colorado have been turned completely upside down. But one thing hasn't changed: McInnis has disgraced himself and our entire state, and he must withdraw. Rumors have swirled in recent days of plans to subvert the will of primary voters, and manipulate the primary process to substitute another candidate after the vote.
If you haven't already, please take a moment to sign our petition demanding that Scott McInnis withdraw from the gubernatorial race immediately-enough is enough.
Residents of the Gulf coast are bracing once again for a tropical storm headed their way. Such a storm could make the BP oilspill - already a disaster - much worse, bringing poisoned waters further inland.
This sort of environmental catastrophe must never happen again. Please join The Wilderness Society in urging Congress to pass Rep. Rahall's CLEAR Act (HR 3534), which will bring critically needed reforms to oil industry practices, onshore and offshore.
Yesterday UFW President Arturo Rodriguez and more than 75 farm workers from across California traveled to Sacramento to hand-deliver Senator Dean Florez' farm worker overtime bill (SB 1121) to California Governor Schwarzenegger.
The governor now has 12 days from yesterday to sign or veto the legislation, or let it become law without his signature. Please send an e-mail today and tell the governor to sign this vital bill.
After Tea Party
leader Mark Williams attacked the NAACP with a racist blog post, one national
Tea Party group — the Tea Party Federation — distanced itself from Williams.
But the most prominent leaders have stayed silent, and even the Federation
used the opportunity to again bash the NAACP and downplay Williams' leadership
role.
Please join us in publicly challenging Tea Party leadership by signing the following open letter.
After repeated incidents
of dishonesty on his record and the issues, ex-Rep. Scott McInnis has
been caught red-handed.
Enough is enough. McInnis has misrepresented his record on key issues, engaged in a campaign of falsehoods related to the state's economy and energy industry, and now has been shown to be an academic fraud: accused of offenses that could result in disbarment as an attorney, and would--at least--have gotten any of us expelled from college. McInnis has proven that he cannot be trusted, and isn't qualified to serve as governor.
The Speaker of the Colorado House, the President of the Colorado Senate, and the Denver Post have all called for McInnis to withdraw from the gubernatorial race.
Sign our petition: join
the call for McInnis to immediately withdraw.

Last
year when the ICC issued its first warrant for Bashir for crimes against
humanity and war crimes, Bashir cruelly retaliated against civilians
in Darfur by expelling over a dozen international aid groups.
FOX is claiming that under President Obama, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is refusing to prosecute voting rights offenses when the victims are White and the perpetrators are Black. It's a bogus story based on the allegations of one former Republican DOJ attorney, and it sidesteps a mountain of facts.
On Tuesday, FOX complained that other news outlets weren't covering the story. The next day, CNN uncritically echoed FOX's distorted story, lending it mainstream credibility. We expect FOX to engage in this kind of race-baiting. But CNN should know better, and we need to hold them publicly accountable.
Click this link to send a message to Jon Klein, head of CNN, demanding CNN stop running with half-baked, racially charged stories from FOX. And then please ask your friends and family to do the same:

That's right. BP is using "controlled burns" to contain the oil spill, and any turtles that are not removed from the area before the fire is lit are literally burned alive.
A boat captain who has been leading efforts to rescue the endangered turtles says BP has blocked his crews from entering the areas where the animals are trapped, effectively shutting down the rescue operation.
With BP already facing so
much public outrage, we can stop this. Our friends at Credo Mobile launched
a petition demanding that BP stop burning turtles alive, and you

John Boehner, the Republican Leader in the House of Representatives, believes that Congress should raise the retirement age to 70 and cut Social Security so that we can finance the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That's right: Boehner told a reporter that he thinks we should cut Social Security to pay for war. And later in the day, several other Republicans came out and agreed with him.
The scary thing is: The way things are looking, Republicans could actually win enough seats this fall to put them in charge and make that vision a reality.
So we have to send a clear message to representatives in both parties and the media: If they plan on raising the retirement age to 70 next year, we're going to make sure they're out of work come November.
And we have a powerful way
to do it-using photos. Can you take a moment to print out
a sign making clear that you're against raising the retirement age
to 70 and snap a quick photo of yourself with it? We'll deliver
them to Congress and use them in online ads.

1,000 per day. That's the rate at which immigrants are being deported under the Obama Administration. Amazingly, it's more than under President Bush, and the vast majority are students, taxpayers and hardworking community members.
The Administration has said they are committed to fixing our failed immigration system, but the only changes they have made are to increase enforcement, including a $600 million dollar request for more immigration agents and a recent deployment of 1,200 troops to the border. Things have become so urgent that hundreds of undocumented youth are committing civil disobedience around the country, risking deportation to send a signal that enough is enough.
Presente.org, in collaboration with the National Day Labor Organizing Network (NDLON) and the Trail of DREAMs, are launching an ambitious new campaign calling on the President to use his power to create real change, starting with ending the deeply problematic 287g program. The 287g program is what empowers local authorities like Sheriff Joe Arpaio to conduct vicious raids of Latino communities and is what inspired Arizona to pass SB 1070. It's time to say BASTA to 287g.

As a consumer, you can influence electronics industry leaders as they weigh whether or not to invest in making their supply chains transparent and producing verifiably conflict-free products. Tell companies that if they take conflict out of their products, you'll buy them.

Anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) will do whatever it takes to stop women from accessing abortion. Many CPCs harass, humiliate, and scare women.
Now, CPCs are using popular online search directories to mislead women about their services.
We need to stop CPCs from using popular sites like SuperPages.com and YellowPages.com to advertise abortion services that they clearly don’t provide.
Join us, and help protect women from accidentally going to a CPC staffed by anti-choice volunteers. Add your name to our letter.
This week, Congress will hold the final votes on a financial reform package. It would establish a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; audit the Federal Reserve; toughen regulation of financial firms; shut down the risky, unregulated "shadow markets"; and make sure that banks, not taxpayers, pay for any future bailouts.
And while the bill doesn't
go as far as most of us would like in shrinking the size and influence
of the financial sector, it represents
the most sweeping reforms since the Great Depression.

The oil industry's gross negligence led to the current disaster
in the Gulf and many more like it in the past. It could not be clearer
that we need to transition off of dirty fossil fuels once and for
all. The Obama Administration has promised to refine and reinstate
the moratorium, which they definitely should do. But what we really
need is Congressional action.
The time has come to stand up together against the inordinate
influence of Big Oil and tell our elected representatives that the
oil industry and other dirty fossil fuels industries cannot be allowed
to hijack our energy policy any longer.
Take action

Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas is one of the country's biggest environmental and public health challenges in history. The 2005 Energy Bill exempted a controversial drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing from the Safe Drinking Water Act, which allowed the natural gas industry to unleash a massive 34-State drilling campaign.

The connection between runaway war spending and jobs burst into view in Washington this week. House Appropriations chair Dave Obey put a hold on the $33 billion Afghanistan supplemental war funding until money is passed for domestic programs including Medicaid assistance, money to prevent teacher layoffs, and unemployment insurance extension.
Senate Republicans successfully
filibustered a scaled-back jobs/tax-extenders bill June 17, ensuring
that the impasse will continue into next week, while Defense
Secretary Gates worried that "the military may have to start
furloughing civilians and might not be able to pay members of the
active-duty military" if the $33 billion is not passed by July 4. The standoff gives us additional
time to pressure House members to vote against the war funding.
