Petition
bush to arrest war criminals that massacred 8,000 in Srebrenica
Ten years ago,
massive human rights violations occurred when Bosnian Serb forces killed approximately
8,000 men and boys at Srebrenica in the former Yugoslavia. Although the international
tribunal called it genocide, suspects remain free and the survivors still await
justice. Urge President Bush to end impunity by assuring that remaining NATO
troops in Bosnia arrest indicted war crimes suspects. Also urge President Bush
to extend the international tribunal until all suspects have been arrested and
tried.
Text
of petition:
Dear President Bush,
July 11, 2005 marks the tenth anniversary of the Srebrenica
massacre, where approximately 8,000 men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb
forces at Srebrenica in the former Yugoslavia. A decade later, the survivors
still await justice.
The vast number of unresolved cases of “disappearances” in which
perpetrators have not yet been brought to justice creates ongoing suffering
for their relatives. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
considered the wide-scale, organized, and systematic killing of thousands of
Bosnian Muslims to be genocide. There cannot be reconciliation and sustainable
peace for the victims in the former Yugoslavia without justice for the wars
of the 1990s.
I urge you to end impunity by assuring that the remaining NATO troops in Bosnia
arrest indicted war crimes suspects. I also urge you to support the continuation
of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia until all suspects
have been arrested and tried. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Peititon
2 Prime Ministers of the region cooperate wtih the war crimes investigation
Text of petition:
Dear Prime Minister,
Ten years after the Srebrenica massacre, I am writing
to express my concern about the continuing impunity for this crime, which has
been recognised as amounting to genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal
for the former Yugoslavia.
I welcome the recent improvement in the cooperation between authorities in Serbia
and in Republika Sprska with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former
Yugoslavia, and in particular the transfer to the Hague of a number of indicted
suspects.
However, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić, former Bosnian
Serb General Ratko Mladić and former Bosnian Serb Assistant Commander Zdravko
Tolimir, who are indicted by the Tribunal for crimes committed in Srebrenica
are still free. They are believed to be either in Serbia or in Republika Sprska,
Bosnia and Herzegovina.
I urge you to:
-- take immediate steps to ensure that Ratko Mladić, Radovan Karadžić,
Zdravko Tolimir and all other indicted suspects are arrested and transferred
to the custody of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
-- to ensure full cooperation with any criminal investigations that may be opened
into the events at Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina or in Serbia and Montenegro.
Sincerely,
