What does
it mean to "Adopt-a-Wal-Mart?"
Together we are building a national grassroots movement to change Wal-Mart.
By adopting a specific Wal-Mart store in your community, you will take a leading
role in helping us build community coalitions around all 3,700 Wal-Mart stores
in the country. Specifically, Wake-Up Wal-Mart store adopters ("Leaders
for Change" or LCs) are changing Wal-Mart by agreeing to:
Take a leading role
in building a community coalition at a specific Wal-Mart by signing up here to
illustrate your commitment to changing America.
Find other community
members, friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors who will join your local Wake-Up
Wal-Mart community coalition and volunteer to help you change America.
Get in touch with
local organizations to ask them to recruit volunteers and participate in action.
[Some ideal groups are local chapters of the Sierra Club, the National Organization
of Women (NOW), Democracy for America, Jobs with Justice, ACORN, MoveOn, among
many others].
Participate in monthly
actions with the national Wake-Up Wal-Mart campaign and other Leaders for Change
across the country. The actions involve educating potential consumers, signing
up supporters to the Wake-Up Wal-Mart campaign and building your community coalition
to include as many organizations as possible. (Past actions have included signing
people up at local events on the "Love Mom, Not Wal-Mart" Mother's Day
campaign and hosting a house party as part of the "Make Wal-Mart Care about
Health Care" campaign).
The Wake-Up Wal-Mart
campaign will do the following to help support you in your role as a Leader
for Change:
- COMMUNICATE.
We will be in conversation with Leaders for Change in the following ways:
- Hosting
a national strategy conference call once a month to discuss upcoming actions
and to allow Leaders for Change to exchange ideas and best practices.
- Sending
you one weekly email update on Wal-Mart related news and the campaign's
progress in changing the company.
- Calling
you periodically to update you on the campaign and specific opportunities
to be involved locally.
- Connecting
Leaders for Change in the same city or geographic region so that you can
coordinate actions together.
- EQUIP.
The Wake-Up Wal-Mart campaign will provide you with literature, bumper stickers,
sign-up sheets and other materials for actions via the Action Center of the
web site, email updates and mailings for special actions.
- TRAIN.
We are available to travel to your local community to work with you to train
your community coalition and come up with a specific plan to be successful
in your community.
- MEDIA
SUPPORT. We will provide you with press and communications advice
and support so that you can receive local press coverage for your work and
educate people in your community through the media.
